Established in the year 1997, under the aegis of Bihar State Milk Co-operative Federation, Shahabad Milk Union, covers the vast and resourceful region along the colossal river Sone. The SMU was end implementing agency for the Operation Flood Programme and undertakes Dairy Development activities on the Anand pattern within its areas of operation. The establishment of union was a revolutionary step in itself, as it aimed to change the lives of farmers in and around four districts of the historically important Shahabad region. SMU has been instrumental in changing and enriching lives of its milk producers with about 3077 Dairy Cooperative Societies with a huge and impressive membership of about 1.81 Lakh milk producers. Out of which the participation of women folks is about 18%. SMU is integrated functional network of its units namely, Ara Dairy, Rohtas Dairy Project, Kaimur Dairy, Milk Chilling Centres at Kochas and Dumraon and Mineral Mixture Plant at Dumraon. Apart from the existing units, establishment of five lakh litre per day capacity dairy plant and 30 MT capacity powder plant at Dehri-on- Sone and 300MT cattle feed plant at Bihia is in progress which will help to enhance the life style of the people living in this area.
To support the milk procurement activities, input services are also provided by the Union through DCS to about 1.06 lakh producers members. It helps the rural milk producers in enhancing the productivity of their milch animals by providing various requisite inputs like balanced feed, fodder seeds, feed supplements, breed improvement, first-aid services, vaccination, de-worming etc. The Sangh arranges training and awareness generation programmes for milk producers, members of managing committees, secretaries of DCS, A.I. workers etc. The Sangh has been experiencing a very robust increase in the volume of milk procurement which is evident from the fact that the procurement of the Union has increased voluminously from 28 TKPD from its inception to 257.7 TKPD in the last financial year.
The producers members and staff working Union are highly efficient team which is evident from the fact that the Union has reached a new high in marketing in this current year, with an average sale of 59.8 TLPD. SMU has vetured in a new zone of Cheese production and aims to take the existing market surplus of milk in recent times. As multi-district-level milk union, the union aims at improving and empowering the live of farmers and also fulfilling the dream of atleast one bihari dish in the plate of everone i.e. SUDHA milk or milk products.
